Fall 2026 Events
Through creative programming and collaborations between 糖心APP鈥檚 colleges, schools, and programs, the Institute for Public Humanities and the Arts will showcase ways in which the humanities and the arts are relevant to other areas of study, including the natural and social sciences. These initiatives are part of the University鈥檚 strategic plan, 糖心APP 100, an ambitious course leading to 糖心APP鈥檚 centennial in 2035.
As founding director, scholar, author, and New York Times columnist, Dr. Rhonda Garelick is developing a diverse range of programs, including lectures by visiting scholars, workshops, symposia, and off-campus excursions.
Historian Dr. Kate Lister invited me on her BBC podcast, 鈥淏etwixt the Sheets,鈥� to discuss Coco Chanel, fascism, and French history. 听Kate鈥檚 series is a one of the best examples of 鈥減ublic humanities鈥� you could imagine.
I joined 糖心APP President Susan Poser to discuss the enduring value of the humanities and arts in preparing students for flexible, meaningful careers, civic participation, and creative engagement with the world.

The Opportunity Landscape for PhDs
In February 2026,听Rhonda听represented 糖心APP at a special meeting of the ACLS at which Matthew Seligman, president of The Burning Glass Institute, gave a fascinating presentation. He spoke about the future of graduate study, the role of PhDs, and the way A.I. will change these landscapes.听

The Op-Ed Project
In November, IPHA brought the Op-Ed Project to 糖心APP! A group of 糖心APP faculty and administrators from across the university benefited from this intensive, two-day workshop on how to turn their ideas outward鈥攈ow to amplify their voices in the public sphere.

THE FUTURE OF RESEARCH FUNDING
In October, IPHA hosted a public conversation with two leaders of major granting organizations, discussing the future of research funding in a challenging environment. We talked with President of the American Council of Learned Societies, Dr. Joy Connolly and Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Dr. Laura Auricchio.听

Mr. Malachi leads communications for Herm猫s USA, defining brand strategy. He oversees a team of 25, creating events and campaigns across digital, social, and experiential media. Partners in the cultural sphere include the MET Museum, Performance Space NY, Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, and the Aperture Foundation. Malachi serves as a mentor to young talent and often speaks to MBA students on the craft of effective communication.

For 30 years, Pauline Brown has acquired, built, and led the world鈥檚 most influential luxury brands. She is the former chairman of North America for LVMH Mo毛t Hennessy Louis Vuitton, where she provided regional leadership for 70 brands in five sectors including fashion and leather goods, watches and jewelry, perfume and cosmetics, wine and spirits, and selective retailing. Ms. Brown teaches at Columbia Business School and is the author of the groundbreaking book,听Aesthetic Intelligence: How to Boost It and Use It in Business and Beyond.

Ms. Hilal presents her new book,听Ugliness. She is a visual artist, writer, and curator based in Hamburg and Berlin. Ms. Hilal studied Islamic studies and political science with a focus on Gender and Decolonial Theory in Hamburg, Berlin, and London. Ms. Hilal is co-founder and co-curator of AVAH (Afghan Visual Arts and History) collective. Her essayistic debut听贬盲蝉蝉濒颈肠丑办别颈迟听(Ugliness) won the Hamburg Literature Prize for nonfiction and is listed as one of the most beautiful German books by听Stiftung Buchkunst.

Ms. Thurman is senior critic for听The New Yorker, a听National Book Award winner, and was conferred the insignia of Chevali猫re de L鈥檕rdre des Arts et des Lettres. She has been a staff writer at听The New Yorker听since 2000 and a contributor since 1987, specializing in cultural criticism. Ms. Thurman is the author of听Isak Dinesen: The Life of a Storyteller,听which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1983, and was the basis for Sydney Pollack鈥檚 Oscar-winning film听Out of Africa. Her latest book,听A Left-Handed Woman, won the 2023 PEN award for The Art of the Essay.
